Willow & Stems
Flowers were always a part of Sherry’s life, Founder of Willow & Stems. For her, getting married close to 4 years ago was one of the most magical moments in her life, and the flower arrangements she chose helped create an emotion she wanted her guests to feel - telling the story of the couple’s love for nature.
“My friends and family loved our flowers, and I then thought to myself “why don’t I do this for others?” Shortly after, I started designing wedding bouquets for brides, which evolved into creating centerpieces, and eventually designing ceremony spaces such as chuppahs and arbours. The love for making people happy and the passion I have for flowers made me want to continue, and led me to starting Willow & Stems.”
Just like in any industry, the floral business for weddings also has its trends. Sherry provided us with some insight on some highlights for this spring and summer season. “There are a lot of different colour schemes to choose from this year. As bold as burgundy, light shades of lilac and dusty blues, or sticking with traditional blush tones, at the end of the day, it’s a personal choice, and it’s all beautiful. A big trend this year is bringing greenery indoors. A lot of my clients are requesting an abundance of greenery and installations to create an organic garden feel for indoor ceremonies and reception spaces.”
Is there an event you designed with Willow & Stems that stands out as being the most spectacular?
“One of the most memorable events was arranging flowers for my sisters wedding. Her and her fiancé gave me ultimate freedom to be as creative as possible. I really wanted to incorporate their love story into the floral design. One of their first dates was an afternoon spent sitting in a park in London, England where they live. The parks in London are full of beautiful gardens and of course tons of greenery. I wanted their ceremony space to have that same feel. I used a mixture of potted plants, lush greenery and florals to complete the garden feel of the chuppah, and it was beautiful. That’s probably the most special event of all, knowing that I added an element of beauty for my sister’s most cherished day.”
Describe your ideal or favourite event space. Have you found it? What are some features of different spaces that you enjoyed?
“One of my clients got married in Muskoka, overlooking the lake at her uncle’s cottage. It was a private island, we had to take a boat to get there. It was so intimate, surrounded by trees, birds, it was perfect. I also really like the vibe of city weddings. There are some incredible venues in Toronto, one of my favorites is The Fermenting Cellar in the Distillery. The walls have so much character, the table layout and dance floor is perfect for any size wedding, and the dance floor has space for live bands. It just seems like the perfect place to accommodate all types of weddings.”
