Liat Aharoni is a photographic wizard and nature explorer. [Space Is] sat down with Liat Aharoni Photography mostly to gawk at photos, but also to familiarize ourselves with her artistic processes. The creative direction component of her work is one aspect that brings excitement to the photos, along with the rapport she builds with clients. Magic is in the air with Liat Aharoni Photography, as she captures truly special events all over the world. And of course, lighting is everything!
What process do you go through to find the perfect location for your shoots?
“I think it’s less about finding a perfect (or beautiful) location and more so about encouraging couples to choose a location that holds meaning to their relationship! Once that’s figured out, finding beauty in a location is really about understanding and being able to work with light. In this way, I believe that beautiful photos can be created anywhere!”
Where do you get your inspiration to create more unique and artistic photography?
“Generally speaking, I’m inspired by Baroque style paintings, fine art photography as well as films and books - many of which are either period dramas or fantasy based. When I’m photographing people though, I try to let go of any previously formed ideas. I try my best to go with the flow as much as possible and to draw inspiration from the people in front of my lens and our environment. I want to be inspired by these two elements in particular - the people and their environment - in order for my work to be an honest reflection of who they are and their dynamic to one another in this chapter of their lives.”
Which wedding or engagement shoot has been most exciting for you and why?
“I’m constantly curious about our world and the people in it. I love being a wedding photographer because it allows me to experience the ways in which people from all walks of life celebrate love. One of my favourite experiences was being able to photograph a Hindu wedding at Tijara Fort in India because it was so vibrantly rich with traditions, colour as well as diversity – loved ones from all over the world gathered to celebrate with the couple!”
Describe your ideal or favourite event space. Have you found it? What are some features of different spaces that you enjoyed?
“I personally love event spaces that make you feel as though you’re somewhere else entirely. Doesn’t matter if the venue is indoors or outdoors - if the place is able to create a feeling of magic then I absolutely love it. Places in Ontario that I love are Cabins at the Domain in Haliburton and BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Etobicoke! Both venues couldn’t be more different from one another and yet they have one very beautiful thing in common: when you’re there, you feel as though you were transported to a different world!”
